As Ireland accelerates its transition to a low-carbon economy, fleet electrification has become a pivotal strategy for businesses aiming to reduce emissions and operational costs. To support this shift, the Irish government and associated agencies have introduced a range of grants and incentives in 2025. This guide provides an in-depth look at these opportunities, helping businesses navigate the available options.

Overview of Fleet Electrification Grants

Fleet electrification grants in Ireland are designed to alleviate the financial burden of transitioning from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). These grants cover various aspects, including vehicle purchase, charging infrastructure, and associated tax benefits.

Vehicle Purchase Grants

Light Commercial Vehicles (N1 Category)

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers grants for businesses purchasing new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the N1 category:

  • N1S (Small Vans): Up to €3,800 for qualifying BEVs with a list price between €14,000 and €60,000.

  • N1L (Large Panel Vans): Up to €7,600 for BEVs with a maximum mass of exactly 3,500kg and a list price up to €90,000.

It is important to note that these grants are exclusively available for new vehicles and are not applicable to second-hand ones.

Heavy-Duty Vehicles (ZEHDVs)

For businesses ready to take the next big step in fleet electrification, investing in zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles (ZEHDVs) can now come with serious financial backing. The Zero-Emission Heavy Duty Vehicle Purchase Grant Scheme is Ireland’s strongest push to help companies decarbonize their logistics and freight operations, as it offers substantial support:

  • Grant Amount: Calculated as a percentage of the price difference between the ZEHDV and a diesel equivalent, with a maximum funding of €500,000.

  • Eligibility: Depends on vehicle type, company size, and prior grant history.

  • Application: Submit the application form via email to zehdvgrant@pierse.ie.

Electric Small Public Service Vehicles (eSPSVs)

The National Transport Authority (NTA) administers the eSPSV25 Grant Scheme to support the adoption of electric taxis, hackneys, and limousines:

  • Standard Grant: Up to €10,000 for a new full battery eSPSV.

  • Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles: Drivers can not only get up to €10,000 to buy a new fully electric SPSV, but also qualify for an additional €2,500 if they convert it to be wheelchair accessible.

  • Scrappage Incentive: If you scrap an older, high-mileage vehicle, you can receive up to €20,000 towards a replacement. If the new vehicle is wheelchair accessible, the grant increases to €25,000.

  • Application Deadline: 21 November 2025, or earlier if funds are exhausted.

Charging Infrastructure Grants

Electrifying your fleet isn't just about the vehicles -charging infrastructure is half the equation. Whether you’re running operations from a central depot or managing a distributed fleet across multiple sites, Ireland’s 2025 grant schemes make setting up EV charging more affordable than ever.

These grants are designed to ease the transition by reducing upfront installation costs, improving access to power across urban and rural areas, and encouraging more businesses to take the leap toward a fully electric fleet.

Home Charger Grant

SEAI provides a grant of up to €300 for the purchase and installation of a home charger unit. Applicants must use a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor, and the charger must be connected to the applicant's home.

EV Apartment Charging Grant

For dwellings without access to a driveway, the SEAI offers grants covering 60% to 90% of the costs associated with installing EV chargers in apartment complexes:

  • Local Authorities or Housing Bodies: 90% coverage.

  • Owners’ Management Companies: 80% coverage.

  • Build-to-Rent Developments: 60% coverage.

ZEVI TII EV Recharging Infrastructure Grant

The Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) offer grants to support the development of EV charging infrastructure along national roads:

  • Funding: Up to 70% of the eligible costs, with a maximum grant of €300,000.

  • Eligibility: Open to publicly accessible charging stations within 3 km of main roads. This includes locations like petrol stations, car parks, hotels, and shopping areas.

  • Application Deadline: 14 May 2025.

Tax Incentives

Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) Relief

One of the most valuable incentives for businesses considering fleet electrification is the ongoing Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) relief. This scheme has been extended through the end of 2025, making electric vehicle purchases even more attractive. EVs with a value up to €40,000 pay no VRT, while for electric vehicles priced between €40,000 and €50,000, the amount of VRT relief decreases as the vehicle’s price increases.

Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) Incentive

BIK is the tax employers and employees pay on non-cash benefits. Employees driving electric vehicles can avail themselves of a BIK, reducing the taxable benefit:

  • 2025 Relief: €35,000 electric vehicle specific reduction plus a €10,000 universal reduction, totaling €45,000.

  • Future Reductions: The electric vehicle OMV reduction will decrease in future years to €20,000 in 2026 and €10,000 in 2027.

Success Story

  • Electric Vehicle Adoption: SEAI provided grants for 12,000 new electric vehicles, helping businesses and private drivers reduce their carbon footprint while cutting fuel and maintenance costs.

  • Home Charging Infrastructure: More than 15,400 EV home chargers were installed with SEAI support- making electric mobility more accessible and convenient across the country.

  • Business Support: Over 3,500 businesses received grant support for energy upgrades, totaling €62 million.

Over 3,500 businesses received grant funding to future-proof their operations, with €62 million invested in initiatives like:

  • Energy audit vouchers

  • Renewable heat and microgeneration

  • The new Business Energy Upgrade Scheme

“The incoming government comes at a time where we require a re-doubling of effort to realise the urgent change needed to move away from fossil fuels. The challenge may seem daunting, but we must focus on the combined environmental, economic, social and health benefits to propel us forward,”, SEAI Chief Executive William Walsh noted.
